to strip the 8pt, and the split is an advantage

Ivan says: Hitting is clear, to take some of his momentum away. If he
hadn't split, 1-11 would be clear

my roll

   BAR: O-0 X-0 OFF: O-0 X-0 Cube: 1 turn: Ivan

Ivan says: I would've slotted the 7pt bar - if I miss, he covers it
and cubes. Because it would give an early cube, I prefer that move.
Now I just hit again if possible

Ivan rolls 3 and 5.

Ivan says: Making 22pt is too passive - it gives him control, lets him
make the either bar point, or lets him make inner points. Running 1-9
is too blotty and gains little. I must be active here, so I make a
tempo move - hit on the ace point and step up for an advanced anchor.
It also lets me have a crack at his 18pt man

stefanp says: He can't hit me so the next best thing is to make his 3
point (22pt). 19-24 with the five is too loose I think

Ivan moves 19-24 1-4 .

Ivan says: At this score, he could have cubed there I think - the
position is gammonish against me

right - he will have problems hitting me now because of the man on his
one point

Ivan rolls 1 and 3.

Ivan says: This is dangerous for me. Making 20pt is the intuitive
move, but I can easily be blitzed. My 24pt blot makes blitzing even
more attractive for him

Ivan says: 19-22* 22-23 is playing too deep, but another tempo move
would be good in this position

Ivan says: 4-7 with the three slightly lessens the blitz, as hitting
loose doesn't start a point, but is equally dangerous really

Ivan says: 12-15 2-3 just creates an extra hittable blot. I just make
the 20pt for want of an obviously better move

stefanp says: Making the 5 point (20pt) is best as he can't safety his
anchor. I may have a double coming up as I have a strong blitz
position here - I can hit loose because of the blot on his one point

both

Ivan says: If I run, I lose the anchor while he still has chances to
hit on 4pt and, with his ammo, start to close me out

Ivan says: Running all the way (3-11(2)) works brilliantly if he
doesn't hit (he has 16 hits, more than it looks)

Ivan says: Doing both (3-7(2) 17-21(2)) makes it difficult to escape

Ivan says: He won't get a second anchor, but he can slot 16pt, 18pt or
21pt for a holding game. If I hit, he can come in on the 24pt for an
effective threatening holding position

Ivan says: I'm 25 pips ahead, clearly a racing double but I have to
clear two midpoints and safety two blots. He is now building his board
nicely, with time to spare. I don't double now, because too many of my
rolls force me to play awkwardly, which lessens my racing advantage

stefanp says: Ivan would have a double here normally - let's see what
he does. I think it's a take, because I can use high cubes and he has
gaps and blots to safety

Ivan rolls 2 and 6.

Ivan says: Simply play safe, leave no fluke hits. As soon as he gets
one hit, he doubles (on some cases, he has a gammon off one indirect
hit if I leave another blot)

leaves him with an awkward structure

stefanp says: Probably one of my best rolls here. I think it is clear
to move out to his bar point and play a bar point holding game - he
may have trouble clearing 11pt and 12pt. 13-9 with the last two fours
gives me a builder for my board

Ivan says: Now he has a very effective holding game. I'm in trouble if
I can't roll very well within two or three rolls

Ivan rolls 1 and 3.

Ivan says: I want to preserve outerboard men for handling any awkward
large number rolls, so although 17-21 is good for building/bearing in,
I will conserve a six and play deep (wasting a man, but my lead is
big)

stefanp says: 17-21 is clear. Another big roll for me and I catch up a
lot in the race - but I have enough timing if I roll low numbers
