   BAR: O-0 X-0 OFF: O-0 X-0 Cube: 1 Ivan rolled 6 3.

Ivan says: There's so little equity difference between the top plays
from this kind of roll, it doesn't matter if Jelly likes the run or
the slot. At this score, I don't need to seek every gammon
opportunity, either

stefanp says: 24-18 13-10 is my choice with this roll - but I don't
object to running. The problem with running is that it leads to a
simple game, which Ivan does not want, and it stops him developing on
his side of the board as his next roll will be taken up safetying the
running man

Ivan moves 1-7 7-10 .

stefanp says: Playing safe is OK - but as expected his running play
has not developed his position much. I know have to watch the blitz as
he is heavy on the 19pt and 17pt. I need to run out the front of my
back men or make an anchor if I do not have a pointing throw in my
inner board

22-21 to go for an advanced anchor

duplicate twos (for the 21pt)

Ivan says: 20 pips ahead. If I can safety the man on 9pt, I may have a
double rather soon

Ivan rolls 1 and 3.

Ivan says: no good one for me if I safety. Getting the 20pt is
intuitively very good, but it gives him a chance to blot on a
threating low point in my board, which I don't want. However, I don't
see any good alternative. 19-23 and 19-22 9-10 easily lose my racing
lead, plus allow him to hit loose in his board

Ivan says: Again, my theme is simple - go forward, play safe, keep my
lead. The next roll could be tricky - I think he made a mistake moving
up to the 21pt and 20pt earlier - now he has the advantage of the deep
man (was that hit with the 31 correct, therefore?)

stefanp says: He must play safe again as he is ahead in the race. 10-
17 looks best

liability? I think an assett - I'll play from my midpoint as that is

to crunch (emphasise "start to"). Leaving one man on 13pt makes the
nicest visual pattern but would be wrong - cuts his army in two if I
hit, plus makes him crunch badly perhaps 15% of the time

Ivan says: He has 4 hits if I bring two men down, plus a cube if I
don't come in well. Stacking 20pt is ugly but it works thematically. I
could't use the loose man on 14pt for much anyway (2 rolls to make
16pt, but what else?). So his 4 hits are better than my 3 good rolls
(22 42 11) if I bring two men down

stefanp says: Hmmm, getting ugly with 12-20 but 12-18 12-14 leaves a
blot - choices! I don't know which is right, but if you make a real
ugly play best to look for an alternative

and I need a six to play without breaking my anchor

   BAR: O-0 X-0 OFF: O-0 X-0 Cube: 1 turn: Ivan

Pipcounts: stefanp 104 Ivan 98

Ivan says: However, that is probably the correct play, with my
midpoint still there. Plus the race is still close. Keeping the man on
24pt gives him better game winning chances but he can't afford that
luxury now

Ivan says: I don't double because: it's not even a no-contact double,
he has a spare man to hit or run, his forced sixes aren't bad, and
there's always the long-range shot on 12pt

stefanp says: Ivan may double here - but the race is close (104 to 98
pips), but then he is on roll. If it is a take it's a bare one!

Ivan rolls 6 and 4.

Ivan says: Moving the six down is clear, but then slot 22pt, slot
24pt, or the safe 19-23? As the race is close I want to hit if I can,
so slotting is not best (even though is good for bear-off). Plus the
long-range hit gives me a re-hit, which I don't want returned in my
inner board

stefanp says: Another missed opportunity as he knows I am a taker! He
has to break his bar point or midpoint. I go along with either but
perhaps the bar is better as my board is deteriorating

Ivan says: Thorpe says cube/take. Cube, certainly, but take? It's a
close-to-moderate take. Not a drop.

stefanp says: Now the double is clear - and a drop on the race. My
hitting chances are also low if he safeties the man on the midpoint

Ivan doubles.

stefanp says: Drop!!

stefanp gives up. Ivan wins 1 point.
score in 11 point match: Ivan-3 stefanp-4

Ivan says: I'm surprised - was a close decision, but I think a take.
He comes out with three numbers (27%) and uses pips usefully for two
rolls, by which time I've given him space to come out with the other
two men
