Fent Poorly is one of this century's great underrated literary figures. From a humble background, he has laid down a challenge to conventional contemporary thinking that has won him great respect from his peers, yet he remains almost unknown to the public. We present here translations of four of his early pieces, mostly unfinished, that give a taste of his style. Of his full works, only one, The Age of the Monkey, has been translated into English Queneau
